Wilmslow sits in the north of Cheshire East, which Cheshire East Council’s town centre plan places 14 miles south of Manchester city centre and 3 miles from Manchester Airport.[3] The Wilmslow built-up area had 25,728 residents at the 2021 Census,[2] within a Cheshire East population of 398,772.[1] Its parish church, St Bartholomew’s, is Grade I listed,[6] and the council’s plan points to Lindow Common, the Carrs and the Bollin Valley on the town’s doorstep, with Quarry Bank Mill and the Styal Estate close by.[3] The SK9 postcode district also takes in Handforth, Alderley Edge, Styal and part of Mobberley,[7] so a Wilmslow address doesn’t always tell customers, or Google, exactly which village you serve.
The same plan counts 241 town-centre units, mainly on Grove Street, Alderley Road and Water Lane, alongside “a strong office market which attracts commuters in”.[3] It names Hoopers department store and the independent Rex cinema among the town’s attractions, and lists Airport City, Alderley Park and Waters Corporation among nearby employers.[3] The 2022 proposal for a Wilmslow Business Improvement District was pitched at independent retailers, national retailers, hospitality operators and the professional and office sector.[4] Across Cheshire East, 15.0% of jobs are professional, scientific and technical and 11.2% are in manufacturing, against 9.7% and 7.0% across England.[5]
