Poynton is in the north-east of Cheshire East, on the boundary with Stockport borough in Greater Manchester. Around 14,060 people lived in Poynton with Worth parish at the 2021 Census,[2] out of 398,772 across Cheshire East.[1] The council’s Local Plan names Poynton as one of nine Key Service Centres,[4] and plans for around 650 new homes and 10 hectares of employment land here between 2010 and 2030.[5] Poynton Town Council still calls it a village, and points to its Shared Space design, with wide pavements and slow traffic, and to independent shops sitting between high street chains and major supermarkets.[6]
Coal made Poynton. The local history society, writing for the town council, records coal output of about 250,000 tons a year in the 1850s, the last mines closing in 1935, and the town growing as a residential area in the 1960s and 70s.[7] Getting around has changed recently: the £53m relief road, Roy Chadwick Way, opened to traffic in March 2023, linking Adlington with the A555 Manchester Airport relief road in Stockport.[10] Across Cheshire East, 15.0% of jobs are in professional, scientific and technical work, against 9.7% across England,[3] and Poynton’s SK12 postcode also takes in Disley, Adlington, Pott Shrigley and part of Stockport borough.[11]
