02What is it?
What is local SEO for tradespeople?
Local SEO for tradespeople is getting a business that travels to its customers in front of people searching for that trade in the towns it covers: on Google Maps, in ordinary search results and in AI answers.
Most trades work from home or a yard, so shopfront advice doesn’t fit: the address needs hiding, the areas need setting by hand, and the website has to do more of the work. When someone types “electrician near me” into their phone, Google weighs how far each business is from them, so the details have to be right. Doing it yourself? Our local SEO checklist for UK trades takes you through every step.
What Google says
“For example, if you’re a plumber and run your business from your residential address, clear the address from your Business Profile.”
- You can set up to 20 service areas by town, city or postcode, but not as a radius.
- The overall area shouldn’t be more than about two hours’ drive from where you’re based.
- Adding unnecessary information to your business name could get the profile suspended.
03What we do
Six jobs that get a trade found and called.
A profile set up for how you work
Set up as a service-area business: home address hidden, your towns or postcodes added, your real business name and a phone number you control. One profile for the whole area you cover.
Categories and services for your trade
The most specific primary category Google offers for what you do, as few extra categories as possible, and your main jobs listed as services so the profile matches what people search for.
Reviews from every job
A review request built into the invoice or the text you send when the job’s done, so every customer gets the same honest ask and nothing is offered in return.
A page for each main service
Boiler repairs, rewiring, flat roofs, extensions: each main job gets its own page with real photos, what’s involved, where you cover and a number people can tap to call. Emergency call-outs get a page only if you really do them.
Town pages that earn their place
Pages for the towns where you genuinely work and have something specific to say, linked from your service pages. Never a hundred near-identical pages with the town name swapped.
Calls tracked back to the source
Your profile counts taps on its call button, not jobs, so we set up a simple log and a habit of asking every caller how they found you. Then you can see what’s actually bringing in work.
Your profile does most of the work on the map, so see our Google Business Profile management and Google review management, and our guide to service and location pages for what Google allows.
04What we won’t do
No shortcuts. Nothing that risks your profile.
Plenty of trade marketing packages include things that break Google’s rules, from stuffed business names to town pages by the hundred. Google’s spam policies and Business Profile guidelines rule these out, so we leave them out.
- Keywords in your business name “Smith Plumbing”, not “Smith Plumbing Emergency Boiler Repair Worcester”: Google says extras could get the profile suspended.
- A virtual office in every town Google says a virtual office isn’t eligible for a Business Profile.
- A radius around your base Google doesn’t allow it, so we set real towns and postcodes instead.
- Near-identical town pages Google names “substantially similar pages” as an example of doorway abuse.
- Asking customers to mention the job or town Google’s policy says businesses shouldn’t request that specific content be included in a review.
- Promising you the top spot Google says there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
05Questions
Trades, straight answers.
What tradespeople ask us about local SEO, including home addresses, service areas, emergency searches and tracking calls.
What is local SEO for tradespeople?
Local SEO for tradespeople is getting a trade business that travels to its customers found by people searching for that trade in the towns it covers. It means a Google Business Profile set up as a service-area business, a steady flow of genuine reviews, a website with a page for each main service and for towns where you genuinely work, and a simple way of tracking where calls come from.
Do you do local SEO for trade businesses in Worcester?
Yes. Get Found is a local SEO agency based at 39 Foregate St, Worcester, with a second office in Stockport, and we work with plumbers, electricians, builders, roofers and other trades across the UK. Local SEO for trades is part of our local SEO service. Every project starts with a free visibility audit, and there are no long contracts.
I work from home. Will my address show on Google?
It shouldn’t. If customers don’t come to you, Google treats you as a service-area business and says you should hide your address. Its own example is a plumber running the business from home, who should clear the address from the profile. You then add the towns or postcodes you cover instead, up to 20 of them.
Can I show up in towns I don’t live in?
Your service areas tell customers where you work, but Google doesn’t say they extend where you appear, and distance from the person searching is one of the three things Google says local results are based on. A genuinely useful page about the work you do in a town can make your website more relevant there, but nobody can promise you a place on the map far from your base.
How do I show up for emergency and “near me” searches?
There’s no special setting for them. Google looks at how well your profile matches the search, how far you are from the person searching and how well known you are. So the basics matter most: the most specific category, accurate hours including any out-of-hours cover you genuinely offer, a service page for emergency work if you really do it, and a phone number people can tap to call.
Should I pay for Local Services Ads instead?
They’re a separate, paid option. Google’s UK help page says you pay only for leads related to your business, and lists categories including plumbers, electricians and roofers, with a check to confirm you’re eligible. Your Business Profile reviews show in the ads too, so the organic work still matters. Ads don’t change your normal ranking: Google says there’s no way to pay for a better local ranking.
How will I know if it’s bringing in calls?
Your Business Profile shows calls as the number of times someone tapped the call button, not answered calls or booked jobs, and Google removed the call history feature in July 2024. So we set up a simple log and get you asking every caller how they found you. Together they show which work is bringing in jobs.
Can you guarantee I’ll be top of Google Maps?
No, and nobody honestly can. Google says there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and it warns that third parties can’t promise a ranking on Search or Maps. What we can do is make sure nothing on your side is holding you back, and show you what’s changing.
Rather talk it through? You’ll speak to the local team, not a call centre.
