The Google 3-Pack: What It Is and How to Get Your Business Into It
What the Google 3-pack is, the three things Google says decide who appears, and the steps a UK local business can take without risking a suspension.
01Local SEO agency · Worcester-based, working UK-wide
We get owner-run local businesses into the Google Maps 3-pack and the local results beneath it, then make sure the same signals feed the answers AI tools give. A real team based in Worcester, working with businesses UK-wide: 22 years in, and no long contracts.
Illustration: a ranking grid laid over a map of Worcester for the search “electrician near me”, for a fictional business, Sabrina Electrical. Each point shows where the business ranks on Google Maps when someone searches from that spot. Before, it ranks outside the top three almost everywhere (average position 17.6). After, it is in the top three across most of the area (average position 3.7) and appears first in the Maps 3-pack.

02Why the 3-pack matters
When someone nearby needs what you do, the Google Maps 3-pack is where most of them start. It’s the block of three local businesses, with a map, that appears before the ordinary website results. Local SEO is the work of getting you into it, and keeping you there.
For searches like “plumber near me” or “dentist in Stockport”, Google usually shows a map with three businesses under it, above the normal website results. Being fourth means being out of sight.
Call button, directions, opening hours, photos and reviews, all in one place. Plenty of people choose from those three listings without ever visiting a website.
Star ratings and review counts sit right next to your name. A strong, recent set of reviews wins the click even when you’re not first.
The pack depends on where the searcher is standing. You can be top in St John’s and missing in Barbourne. That’s why we measure rankings across a grid of points, not from one desk.
03What we do
Local rankings come from a handful of things: how complete and active your profile is, what your reviews say, how consistent your details are across the web, how well your website backs it all up, and who locally vouches for you. We work on all of them.
A Google Business Profile that earns its place
Your profile is the listing that appears in the Maps pack, so it has to be right. We set it up properly, then keep it active. We also watch for the edits Google and the public can suggest, because a wrong phone number or closing time can quietly cost you calls.
You stay the owner of your profile and we’re added as a manager. Business Profile itself is free to use; you pay for our time. Google’s tips for working with a third party. More on our Google Business Profile management service.
A steady flow of genuine reviews
Reviews can help where you rank and whether people choose you. The reliable way to get more is to ask every customer at the right moment and make it easy. We build that habit into how you already work, and help you reply in your own voice, to every complaint and to praise worth answering.
We never write, buy or incentivise reviews. More on our Google review management service.
The same name, address and phone number, everywhere
Your business details (your NAP: name, address, phone) appear on directories, maps apps and data sites you’ve probably never visited. Old addresses, old numbers and duplicate listings muddy the picture Google and AI tools have of you. We find them, fix them, and get you listed where your trade and town matter.
Bing Places is one of the listings we keep in step. More on our Bing Places & Bing SEO service.
Service and area pages people actually want to read
Your profile links to your website, and Google reads both. We make sure your site backs up what your profile says: proper pages for your main services and the towns you cover, written for people rather than stuffed with place names, plus the technical basics done right.
Links and mentions from your own patch
A mention in the local paper, a link from a supplier or a trade body, a sponsorship page for the Sunday league team. Local links like these tell Google, and AI tools, that you’re a real, established part of the community. We find the opportunities and do the legwork.
Rankings measured across your whole area
Checking your ranking from one spot tells you very little, because Maps results change with the searcher’s location. We track your position from a grid of points across the area you serve, then send a plain-English monthly report: where you moved, what that meant in calls and clicks, and what we’re doing next.
Every branch found in its own town
Each location needs its own profile, its own page, its own reviews and its own tracking, without the branches competing with each other. We keep the brand and details consistent across all of them, and report on each one separately.
Each branch is set up and reported on separately. More on our local SEO for multiple locations service.
04Local SEO meets AI search
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews for a good local business, the answer doesn’t come from nowhere. These tools lean on much the same evidence Google Maps does. When your profile, reviews, listings and website all tell the same clear story, you’re easier to recommend. When they contradict each other, you’re easier to leave out.
Who’s a reliable electrician in Worcester?
Sabrina Electrical is a well-reviewed option. Customers often mention same-day call-outs and tidy work, and its details are consistent across its Google profile, website and local listings.
Local SEO builds the foundation. AI SEO goes further: making your business easy for AI tools to understand, quote and recommend.

It depends on where you’re starting from and how hard your competitors are pushing. Some fixes, like choosing the right Google Business Profile categories or correcting business details that don’t match across the web, can make a difference fairly quickly. Building the reviews, links and pages that keep you in the top three is steadier, month-by-month work. We won’t promise a date, but every monthly report shows exactly what has moved and what hasn’t.
Every plan is quoted after a free visibility audit. A single-location trade in a quiet market and a multi-branch clinic in a crowded one are very different jobs, so we look first and then quote in plain English. You’ll know what’s included and what it costs before anything starts.
No. We don’t do long contracts. Local SEO has to earn its keep every month, and our monthly report is there so you can judge that for yourself.
You need to serve customers in person, but you don’t need a shopfront. If customers come to you, your profile shows your address. If you go to them, as most trades do, you can hide your address and set the areas you cover instead. What you can’t do is use a virtual office or PO box as your address: that breaks Google’s guidelines and can get a profile suspended. We’ll set up the right type of profile for how you actually work.
Yes, the honest way. We make it easy to ask every customer, with direct review links, follow-up messages and simple prompts your team can use, and we help you reply to every complaint, and to praise when there’s something worth saying. We never write, buy or incentivise reviews. It breaks Google’s rules and can get reviews removed or a profile restricted.
No, and we’d be wary of anyone who does. Google decides the rankings, and Maps results change depending on where the person searching is standing. What we can promise is clear, sensible work on the things that influence local rankings, and reporting that shows you exactly where you rank across your area, month by month.
Yes. When someone asks an AI tool for a local recommendation, it leans on many of the same signals Google Maps uses: your Business Profile, your reviews, your listings on other sites, your website and what local sources say about you. Getting those strong and consistent is the foundation of being recommended. Our AI SEO service builds on that foundation.
How AI SEO worksNo. We’re based in Worcester, with a second office in Stockport, and we do local SEO for businesses anywhere in the UK. Local SEO is about your town and your customers, not ours: we research how people search in your area, who you’re up against in the Maps pack and which local sources matter there. If you’re near one of our offices you’re welcome to pop in; everywhere else, we work by phone and video.
