Hyde is one of the nine towns brought together as the borough of Tameside in 1974.[10] Its three wards, Hyde Godley, Hyde Newton and Hyde Werneth, had 39,815 residents between them at the 2021 Census,[1] and the SK14 postcode district reaches beyond them into Stockport borough and the Derbyshire village of Tintwistle.[9] The centre is built around a Grade II listed town hall[6] and a market hall reached from Clarendon Square.[8] Tameside Council’s masterplan for Hyde puts the Town Hall, Market Square and Clarendon Shopping Centre at the top of the list, starting with £237,000 of High Street Accelerator seed funding,[3] and work to open up the Market Ground for markets and community events began in November 2024.[4]
Making things still matters here. At the 2021 Census, 10.5% of working residents in Hyde Newton were employed in manufacturing, against 7.3% across England,[2] and the council’s growth strategy counts manufacturing among Tameside’s three core sectors, with retail and with public administration, education and health.[5] The same strategy plans 2,350 homes at Godley Green Garden Village and says the development will put over 2,000 households within walking distance of Hyde town centre.[5] Above the town, Werneth Low Country Park is managed by Tameside Council in partnership with the Hyde War Memorial Trust,[7] and Hyde has two railway stations, Hyde Central and Hyde North.[11][12]
