02What is it?

What is AI Overview optimisation?

AI Overview optimisation is making sure Google can find, read and link to your business when it writes an AI Overview or an AI Mode answer, using the same SEO that ordinary search rewards.

Google says both features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, and may use “query fan-out”: running several related searches and pulling the answer together. That means a page that clearly answers a customer’s follow-up question can be linked even if it isn’t top for the original search. Doing it yourself? Our guide to appearing in Google’s AI Overviews walks through the checks step by step.

What Google says

“There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”
  • To be a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
  • Optimising for generative AI search is optimising for the search experience, and “still SEO”.
  • Since 31 August 2026, every site has a Search Console setting to include or exclude it from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Include is the default.

03What we do

Six jobs that give Google’s AI a reason to cite you.

  • Nothing shutting you out

We check your Search Console AI setting is on include, your main pages are indexed, no theme or plugin has added nosnippet, and your robots.txt, CDN and hosting let Googlebot in.

  • Your Business Profile, right

Google lists an up-to-date Business Profile among the basics for its AI features, and says profiles can help you be visible in AI responses. We keep every detail matching your website.

  • Answers to the follow-up questions

The questions customers ask once they’ve decided they need you, answered on your main service pages. Not a new page for every phrasing, which Google treats as spam.

  • Detail only you can give

Google asks for non-commodity content. For a local firm that means the jobs you take on, how they run, the areas you really cover and who does the work.

  • Pages Google can read easily

Services, areas and contact details written as text, linked from your menu, with any structured data matching what’s on the page. Housekeeping, not a lever.

  • AI impressions, measured

We read Search Console’s generative AI performance report, which shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions by page, country, device and date, and check a fixed list of your key searches to see who gets linked.

AI Overviews are built on Google’s normal search systems, so this work sits alongside our Google Business Profile management. For ChatGPT and the other AI tools, see ChatGPT SEO and our AI visibility audit.

04What we won’t do

No hacks. No promised citations.

Google’s generative AI guide tells site owners to prioritise effective SEO over “AEO/GEO hacks”, and lists things you can ignore. Much of what’s sold as AI Overview optimisation is on that list, so here’s what we leave out.

  • llms.txt and “AI markup” Google says Search doesn’t use them, and creating an llms.txt file will neither harm nor help.
  • A page for every phrasing Google says pages made for question variations primarily to manipulate AI responses break its scaled content abuse policy.
  • Google-Extended as an AI Overview fix Google says it doesn’t affect a site’s inclusion in Google Search, so blocking or allowing it changes nothing here.
  • Paying to be quoted Ads can show above or below an AI Overview, but as of 28 September 2026 Google doesn’t list the UK for ads inside one.
  • Tools claiming inside knowledge Google says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.
  • Guaranteed AI Overview mentions Google doesn’t guarantee indexing or serving, and says AI Overviews often don’t trigger at all.

05Questions

AI Overviews, straight answers.

What local business owners ask us about AI Overview optimisation, including AI Mode, page one and what Google actually needs.

What is AI Overview optimisation?

AI Overview optimisation is making sure Google can find, read and link to your business when it writes an AI Overview or an AI Mode answer. Google says there are no special requirements beyond normal SEO: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and your site mustn’t be switched out in Search Console. The work is making sure nothing is blocking you, keeping your Business Profile accurate, writing pages that answer customers’ real questions, and measuring AI impressions in Search Console.

Do you offer AI Overview optimisation for businesses in Worcester?

Yes. Get Found is based at 39 Foregate St, Worcester, with a second office in Stockport, and we work with businesses across the UK. AI Overview optimisation is part of our AI SEO service. Every project starts with a free visibility audit, which checks where you appear on Google, on Maps and in the main AI tools, and there are no long contracts.

Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says you don’t need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and there’s no special schema.org structured data to add. Its generative AI guide says Google Search doesn’t use llms.txt files, and creating one will neither harm nor help. Structured data is still useful for rich results, as long as it matches what’s on the page.

Do I have to be on page one of Google to appear in an AI Overview?

Not as a documented rule. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core ranking systems, so strong standing in ordinary search is still the foundation, but they may also run several related searches behind the scenes. In July 2025 Ahrefs found 76% of cited pages ranked in the top ten for the search; its March 2026 update put it at 37.9%, though Ahrefs changed its method in between, so the figures aren’t directly comparable.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI Overviews?

It can help. Google lists keeping your Business Profile up to date among the basics for its AI features, and says Business Profiles can help your products and services be visible in AI responses and other Google Search results. Google doesn’t say your profile is where AI Overview text comes from. Separately, Google’s Gemini app uses public Google Maps information such as addresses, ratings and opening hours.

Can I pay to appear in an AI Overview in the UK?

Not inside it. Google says ads can show above or below an AI Overview in all markets where AI Overviews are available, but ads inside AI Overviews are offered only in a list of countries that, as of 28 September 2026, doesn’t include the UK. Inside the summary, the links are chosen by Google’s systems, not bought.

Can you guarantee my business will appear in an AI Overview?

No, and nobody honestly can. Google says indexing and serving aren’t guaranteed, that AI Overviews are only shown when its systems decide they add something and often don’t trigger, and that AI Overviews and AI Mode may show different links. What we can do is remove anything shutting you out, give Google pages worth citing and show you honestly what changes.

How do you measure AI Overview results?

Mainly in Search Console. Google says that since 31 August 2026 its generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date, and AI feature traffic is also counted in the normal Performance report under the Web search type. Search Console doesn’t show who else was linked, so we also check a fixed list of your key searches at regular intervals and note which businesses appear.
