02What is GEO?
What is GEO (generative engine optimisation)?
GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the work of making your business and your content the sources AI tools draw on, quote and name when they write an answer.
A “generative engine” is a tool that writes its own reply rather than listing links: ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. You’ll also hear AEO and AI SEO used for much the same work; our guide to AI SEO, GEO and AEO explains the difference, and our answer engine optimisation page covers AEO.
Google is clear that this is still SEO at heart. Its guide to optimising for generative AI features says that optimising for generative AI search “is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.”
Where the name came from
“GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, by researchers from Princeton University and IIT Delhi with two independent researchers. First published in November 2023 and accepted to the KDD 2024 data-mining conference.
- What helped most: adding citations, quotations and statistics to content.
- What didn’t: keyword stuffing offered little to no improvement.
- The caveat: it was mostly a lab test on a simulated AI search engine, and it measured how much of an answer drew on a source, not traffic or enquiries.
03What we do
Six jobs that make you worth citing.
Pages worth quoting
Clear, specific statements an AI tool can lift and attribute to you: what you do, where, for whom, how pricing works, and the facts behind your claims, such as accreditations, guarantees you actually offer and how long jobs take.
Evidence, not adjectives
Where it’s true and useful, we back statements with sources, figures and quotes. In the original GEO research, adding citations, quotations and statistics did best, while keyword stuffing did little.
A place on the sources they cite
We find the lists, directories and local pages AI answers keep citing for your questions, then work on earning a genuine place on them, with details that match your own site.
Readable, attributable pages
Key facts in plain text rather than images or PDFs, your business name clear on every page, and nothing in robots.txt, firewalls or hosting blocking the crawlers AI tools use. A page they can’t read can’t be cited.
Trusted mentions elsewhere
Genuine reviews from every customer, asked the right way, and earned mentions from local and trade sources that AI tools already draw on. Never bought, never fake.
Checking which sources get cited
A set of real questions for your trade and towns, run regularly across the main AI tools, recording whether you’re named or cited, and which sources they used instead.
GEO is about being a source AI tools cite. Its sister, answer engine optimisation, is about being the answer itself, and ChatGPT SEO covers ChatGPT specifically. If a rival keeps being named instead of you, see why ChatGPT recommends your competitor.
04What we won’t sell you
No hacks. No guarantees.
Nobody outside OpenAI or Google controls what their tools say, so anyone guaranteeing you’ll be “the answer” is guessing. Here’s what we leave out, in line with Google’s own guidance.
- “AEO/GEO hacks” Google tells site owners to prioritise effective SEO strategies over them.
- Keyword stuffing In the original GEO research, it offered little to no improvement.
- Chopping pages into chunks for AI Google says you can ignore “chunking” content for its Search.
- AI text files sold as a ranking fix Google lists unnecessary AI text files, like llms.txt, among the tactics you can ignore for Google Search.
- Bought or fake mentions Google says you can ignore pursuing inauthentic mentions, and fake reviews are banned under UK law.
- “Up to 40%” promises That figure comes from a lab test measuring words in AI answers, not your traffic or enquiries.
05Questions
Generative engine optimisation, straight answers.
What local business owners ask us about GEO, including the questions some agencies would rather you didn’t.
What is generative engine optimisation (GEO)?
Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the work of making your business and your content the sources AI tools draw on, quote and name when they write an answer. A generative engine is a tool that writes its own reply, such as ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot. You’ll also hear it called AEO (answer engine optimisation) or AI SEO. Google describes AEO and GEO as terms for work focused on improving visibility in AI search experiences.
Are you a GEO agency in Worcester?
Yes. Get Found is a GEO agency based at 39 Foregate St, Worcester, with a second office in Stockport, and we work with businesses across the UK. Generative engine optimisation is part of our AI SEO service, which also covers local SEO foundations such as your Google Business Profile and reviews. Every project starts with a free visibility audit, and there are no long contracts.
Where did the term GEO come from?
From a research paper called “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, written by researchers from Princeton University and IIT Delhi with two independent researchers. It first appeared in November 2023 and was accepted to the KDD 2024 data-mining conference. The researchers tested which edits made content show up more in AI-written answers, mostly on a simulated AI search engine they built. Adding citations, quotations and statistics did best, and keyword stuffing offered little to no improvement. The paper measured how much of an answer drew on a source, not traffic or enquiries.
Is GEO different from SEO or AEO?
Mostly, no. Google says that from its point of view, optimising for generative AI search is optimising for the search experience, “and thus still SEO”. GEO and AEO are different labels for much the same work. What GEO adds is a focus on being a source worth citing: clear facts, evidence and plain answers that an AI tool can use and attribute to you.
Can you guarantee ChatGPT or Google will cite my business?
No, and be wary of anyone who says they can. AI answers change with the wording of the question, the person’s location, the tool and the day, and nobody outside those companies controls them. What we can do is strengthen the signals these tools rely on, fix anything holding you back, and show you honestly what changes over time.
How do you measure GEO?
We agree a set of questions that match how your customers actually ask, run them across the main AI tools at regular intervals, and record whether you’re named, cited as a source or missing, and which sources the tools used instead. Because answers vary, we report the trend across many checks rather than a single screenshot, alongside the calls and enquiries that matter to your business.
Rather talk it through? You’ll speak to the local team, not a call centre.

Tell us what you do and where. We’ll show you where you stand on Google, Maps and the AI tools your customers are starting to use, and who’s getting named instead.
What you’ll get
- An AI visibility check: we ask ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity and others about your trade and town, and see who they name
- Where you rank on Google and whether you make the Maps pack
- Whether your details, reviews and site give AI tools what they need
- The fixes we’d make first, in plain English, and a quote if you want our help
