02What is AEO?
What is AEO (answer engine optimisation)?
AEO, or answer engine optimisation, is the work of making your business the one AI tools and voice assistants give as the answer when someone asks a question, rather than one link among many.
“Answer engine” is a name for tools that reply with an answer rather than a list: ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and voice assistants. You’ll also hear GEO and AI SEO used for much the same work. Our guide to AI SEO, GEO and AEO explains where each term comes from, and our generative engine optimisation page covers GEO.
The honest part: most of it is good SEO, done thoroughly. Google says so directly.
“From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.”
03What we do
Six jobs that make you easy to answer with.
Answers to the questions your customers ask
Pages that say plainly what you do, where, for whom, what it costs or how pricing works, and how to book. AI tools look for pages that answer the question, so we write for the customer first.
Answer first, detail after
Key pages that open with a short, direct answer, then the detail: what you do, where, how pricing works and how to book. Questions written the way customers ask them on the phone.
Crawlers that can get in
We check your robots.txt, firewall and hosting aren’t blocking the crawlers that search tools use, such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and PerplexityBot.
Structured data that matches the page
Business, service and location details marked up so machines can read them, and only where they match what’s on the page. Tidy housekeeping, not a trick.
A Business Profile that answers for you
Hours, services, areas and details complete and current on your Google Business Profile. Google lists keeping it up to date among its best practices for its AI features.
Checking whether you’re the answer
Real questions for your trade and towns, run regularly across ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, recording whether you’re the business they answer with.
AEO is about being the answer. Its sister, generative engine optimisation, is about being a source AI tools cite, and ChatGPT SEO covers ChatGPT itself. Most of it starts with local SEO; our AI SEO, GEO and AEO explainer untangles the terms.
04What we won’t sell you
No hacks. No guarantees.
Nobody outside OpenAI or Google controls what their tools say, so anyone guaranteeing you’ll be “the answer” is guessing. Here’s what we leave out, in line with Google’s own guidance.
- “AEO/GEO hacks” Google tells site owners to prioritise effective SEO strategies over them.
- Chopping pages into chunks for AI Google says you can ignore “chunking” content for its Search.
- AI text files sold as a ranking fix Google lists unnecessary AI text files, like llms.txt, among the tactics you can ignore for Google Search.
- Bought or fake mentions Google says you can ignore pursuing inauthentic mentions, and fake reviews are banned under UK law.
- Three bills for one job SEO, AEO and GEO sold as separate retainers for what is mostly the same work.
05Questions
Answer engine optimisation, straight answers.
What local business owners ask us about AEO, including the questions some agencies would rather you didn’t.
What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of making your business the one AI tools use when they answer a customer’s question, rather than just one of a list of links. It covers ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and voice assistants. You’ll also hear it called GEO (generative engine optimisation) or AI SEO. Google describes AEO and GEO as terms for work focused on improving visibility in AI search experiences.
Are you an AEO agency in Worcester?
Yes. Get Found is an AEO agency based at 39 Foregate St, Worcester, with a second office in Stockport, and we work with businesses across the UK. Answer engine optimisation is part of our AI SEO service, which also covers local SEO foundations such as your Google Business Profile and reviews. Every project starts with a free visibility audit, and there are no long contracts.
Is AEO different from SEO?
Mostly, no. Google says that from its point of view, optimising for generative AI search is optimising for the search experience, “and thus still SEO”. Bing says the same SEO best practices also support eligibility for AI-generated answers. A few checks are newer, such as making sure the crawlers AI tools use can reach your site, and asking the tools what they actually say about you.
Do I need to pay for AEO separately from SEO?
Not with us. Answer engine optimisation is part of our AI SEO service, which builds on local SEO. If someone offers SEO, AEO and GEO as three separate monthly fees, ask what they would do under each label that isn’t the same work.
Do FAQ pages and schema markup still help with AEO?
Clear answers to the questions customers ask still help, because AI tools look for pages that answer the question. Schema markup can help machines read your facts when it matches what’s on the page. But Google no longer shows FAQ rich results in Search, and it says structured data isn’t required for its AI features, so we treat markup as tidy housekeeping, not a shortcut into AI answers.
Can you guarantee ChatGPT or Google will use my business as the answer?
No, and be wary of anyone who says they can. AI answers change with the wording of the question, the person’s location, the tool and the day, and nobody outside those companies controls them. What we can do is strengthen the signals these tools rely on, fix anything holding you back, and show you honestly what changes over time.
How do you measure AEO?
We agree a set of questions that match how your customers actually ask, such as “who’s a good accountant in Worcester?”, run them across the main AI tools at regular intervals, and record whether you’re named, cited as a source or missing. Because answers vary, we report the trend across many checks rather than a single screenshot, alongside the calls and enquiries that matter to your business.
